Dr. Hershel Sandberg, MD
It is with heavy hearts we report Dr. Hershel Sandberg, M.D., a great supporter of the arts and a longtime member of Pro Musica of Detroit, has passed.
A resident of Bloomfield Hills, Dr. Sandberg died Friday, June 28, 2024. He was 95 years of age. Services were held Monday, July 1, at Ira Kaufman Chapel in Southfield. Rabbi Aaron Starr and Hazzan Daniel Gross officiated.
Dr. Hershel and his late wife, Mrs. Dorothy Superstine Sandberg, were active supporters of Pro Musica of Detroit. Dr. Hershel served on the Pro Musica Board of Directors, first elected in 1986. Mrs. Dorothy Superstine Sandberg served as Social Committee Chairman in 1984. He also served as Chairman of the Endowment Committee in 1990.
Dr. Sandberg was an internal medicine specialist associated with William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. He was a 1953 graduate of Wayne State University School of Medicine. After receiving his medical degree, Dr. Sandberg completed an internship and residency at Detroit Receiving Hospital, and a fellowship with the WSU School of Medicine. He later served as a clinical assistant and associate professor in the WSU Department of Medicine, and chief of Endocrinology at Sinai Hospital in Detroit. He also was affiliated with Detroit Receiving and Mount Carmel hospitals.
Dr. Sandberg has held membership in the American Society for Clinical Research, the medical societies for the state of Michigan, Wayne and Oakland counties, and the American Diabetes and Michigan Thyroid associations. He is a past-president of the WSU School of Medicine Alumni Association and Board of Governors, and serves on the Pivotal Moments Campaign Committee.
Among his honors, Dr. Sandberg received the state of Israel’s Maimonides Award in 1984 and the WSU School of Medicine Distinguished Alumni Award in 1986.
Immediately following the interment service, family and friends will be gathering until 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Shiva will continue on Tuesday and Wednesday from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Religious services will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
Dr. Sandberg was the beloved husband of the late Lois Sandberg and the late Dorothy Superstine Sandberg. Cherished father of Daniel (Dawn Flint) Sandberg, Dr. Sharon (Dr. Marc Tarnopol) Sandberg, and Jacob Sandberg. Treasured grandfather of Lauren (Jake) Lewis, Erinn Sandberg, Rebecca Tarnopol, Craig Tarnopol, Drew Tarnopol, and Liana Tarnopol. Special great-grandfather of Claire Lewis and Margaux Lewis. Loving brother of the late Avery (the late Maryn) Sandberg and the late Arthur (the late Marion) Sandberg. Also survived by Dorothy’s daughter, Jody (Richard) Grossman, and Dorothy’s grandchildren and great-grandchildren. The family would like to thank Hershel’s caregivers, Delicia Williams and Nonita Knitter for their kindness and compassion.
