ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Wei Yu
Wei Yu was appointed Principal Cello of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra by Music Director Laureate Leonard Slatkin in 2014. He made his solo debut performing Dvořák's Cello Concerto and has appeared as soloist with the DSO every season since. Before joining the DSO, Yu was a member of the New York Philharmonic for seven seasons.
Yu was a prizewinner at the Hudson Valley Philharmonic String Competition, the Holland American Music Society Cello Competition, the Music Teachers National Association Competition (MTNA National Collegiate Strings), Canada’s National Music Festival, Calgary’s Kiwanis Festival, and China’s National Cello competitions.
An avid chamber musician, Yu has been invited to the Marlboro, Ravinia, Great Lakes Chamber Music, and Mainly Mozart music festivals. Wei has collaborated with musicians including cellist Carter Brey and David Soyer; pianists Richard Goode and Menahem Pressler; violinists Augustin Hadelich, Midori, and Pinchas Zukerman; and members of the Guarneri, Emerson, and Juilliard Quartets. As a member of the New York Philharmonic ensembles, he made regular appearances at Merkin Concert Hall.
A successful instructor, Yu serves as a faculty member at the Northwestern University Bienen School Of Music. He has given cello masterclasses at universities and festivals in the United States, Canada, Poland, and China. During the summer, Yu teaches at the Morningside Music Bridge International Music Festival in Calgary, Canada; Carnegie Hall's National Youth Orchestra, and the Center Stage Strings Summer Institute at the University of Michigan.
Born in Shanghai, China, Yu began studying the cello at age four and made his concerto debut at age 11, performing Elgar’s Cello Concerto with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra. He received a Bachelor of Music from North Park University in Chicago and a Master of Music from The Juilliard School. His principal teachers include Mei-Juan Liu, John Kadz, Hans Jørgen Jensen, and David Soyer.
Keun-A Lee
Korean Pianist, Keun-A Lee, has been on the music staffs of Lyric Opera of Chicago, Opera Colorado, Opera Memphis, North Carolina Opera, New York City Opera, Santa Fe Opera, the Spoleto Music Festival USA, The Gotham Chamber Opera, The Juilliard School of Music and Manhattan School of Music.
Following her 1998 debut at the Sejong Center for the Performing Arts in Korea, Ms Lee has focused on piano collaboration. She has performed in such halls as Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall, Weill Recital Hall, Alice Tully Hall, Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, Chicago’s Preston Bradley Hall, Toronto’s Centre for the Arts in Canada, and the Sejong Cultural Center and Seoul Arts Center, in Korea. She has been invited in Internationale Meistersinger Akademie in Germany, Ravinia Festival‘s Steans Music Institute, Merola Opera Program at the San Francisco Opera, Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara where she received a vocal piano prize, Cape Cod Chamber Music Festival as the Samuel Sander Scholarship Awardee and Rockport Chamber Music Festival.
As an orchestral keyboard player, she has worked at the Metropolitan opera, New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and The Juilliard School of Music.
Recent engagements as an active chamber musician include Concert Tour with “Musicians” from New York Philharmonic in Korea, New York Philharmonic Chamber music series in Merkin hall, the season opening concert at Lyric Chamber Music Society of New York, recitals by Marilyn Horne Foundation at the Music Academy of the West and at Santa Monica City College, recitals with the winners of Young Concert Artists and Concert Artist Guild.
Ms Lee’s piano studies began at age four; she received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Piano Performance at Kyung Hee University in Seoul, Korea where she won the silver medal of Samik Piano Competition. She then moved to New York and earned both a master’s degree and Artist Diploma in Collaborative Piano from The Juilliard School. She also holds a Professional Studies Certificate in Vocal Accompanying from the Manhattan School of Music studying. She has finished her term 1 with the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at The Metropolitan Opera where She was employed in the production of The Bartered Bride mounted jointly by The Metropolitan Opera and The Juilliard School and conducted by James Levine.
